Coming January 1, 2013: Beginning the Countdowns

Many people interested in American history know that January 1, 2013 will begin the six-month countdown until the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg that began on July 1, 1863.

But what has been all but forgotten is that on July 1, 1913 – on the 50th anniversary of the day the Battle of Gettysburg began – the opening ceremonies for the Great Reunion, a momentous event attended by more than 50,000 aging Civil War veterans, were held.
